How It All Began Our very first dachshund was a black & tan male named Oscar. He was the best little guy. We rescued him from a shelter when he was only 2 years old. We were lucky as he came house trained & already spoiled. The kids were young then, ages 12 & 3 so Oscar had plenty of play time. We lost Oscar only after owning him for 4 years. It took us several years to decide on another. My search for another doxie began. This time I decided I wanted to get a red male so I wouldn't compare this new puppy to Oscar. I found a little red male puppy for sale by a breeder not too far from me. This little guys name would be Briggs; Briggs Of Oakley. Wonder how many of you remember Briggs Hot dogs? Now I'm telling my age, huh? You see, we had an Oscar, as in Oscar Meyer hot dogs so, it was only fitting we had a Briggs. I must say it don't take long for Briggs to win my heart & everyone that knew him. He knew alot of people. He went to work with me from the day we got him at 8 weeks old. Briggs was there to meet & greet all that walked into the salon. There was not a person who didn't love Briggs. I remember one client of mine would take her fur coat off & lay it down so Briggs could wrap up in it. She did that for Briggs each winter. He was a small frame mini, weighing only 8 lb. He had a great mind, sweet temperament & had no faults. After several years we decided one dachshund was not enough. We looked for a black/tan female.
And then there was Heidi.....
We received Heidi as a gift from a friend in Farmville, Va. She was an 8 week old blk/tan ball of mischief. Always on the search for something moving & wanting to dig, she was all dachshund. She was Eric's favorite. At night Hedi would be found on his lap, Briggs on mine. Heidi would slip out to go digging for moles. This was her favorite pastime. One winter we received an unwanted house guest, a mouse! She hated mice as much as we did. She would search the house until she captured it. A real hunter! Heidi taught Briggs to hunt & Briggs taught her to be a kind loving pet. They did both very well.
And then there were babies.....
They gave us 5 litters of puppies between the two. Briggs went on to father litters from others, but for Heidi her time for motherhood was up. She was stepped on by a horse & had received a cracked pelvic. She lives today as a retired lady, loving life, chasing moles & looking for mice.
Our loss......
We lost Briggs several years ago & to this day, we miss him. When you have been lucky enough to own one that is as special as he you never forget. His traits still go on today with his offspring. Teddy our red male is his fathers son, that's for sure. His gentle temperament shines through in Teddy today. Buster is another son we have of Briggs, along with several grandaughters. To this day we still see puppies born here that remind us of our Briggs Of Oakley.
2 of 6 pups born from Briggs & Heidi's first litter
This is litter 2 from Briggs & Hiedi. There were 5 pups. The big clear red pup in front (which looks like a baby cocker) is Teddy, which we have today. He was the only long hair that these two ever had. This litter's great grandfather was long hair on Heidi's side.
